Annotations for All the Angels

Lyric: And all the angels say
 Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
 You are all to blame
 Cause all the angels say
 Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
 You are all to blame
Annotation:
The people in the young man’s life didn’t love him the way they should have, so in the end, his suicide can be pinned on all the people that should have loved him but didn’t. They are all to blame for his suicide, they all failed at loving him. Even with the second verse, one person showed up for him in his last moments to say goodbye, but they were called there. If that person loved him the way they should have, they would have been aware of the young man’s mental state and would have been there for him before he got to the point of committing suicide. They are all to blame. (If you feel like no one loves you the way you should, please tell someone! Let the ones you care about know so they can be aware of the fact that they need to show love better! You’re never alone, so please, remember to love yourself and let others love you! It’s not worth it to end your life, no matter what!) “Whatever happens to you, no matter what, I’m always fucking there for you…Don’t forget that. I don’t give a shit if your boyfriend dumps you. If your girlfriend dumps you. If you’re working a shitty job or can’t get through school. If you can’t get through a fucking Harry Potter book, there’s nothing worth dying over. There’s nothing worth taking your life over. I will always fucking be there.” - Gerard Way

Lyric: And if you find a better way
 To love me, then
 You are all to blame
Annotation:
The narrator is saying that if these people showed him the love that he needed, he may still be here today. “And if you maybe find a better way to love me then” is saying that the narrator felt unloved and is saying that these people should have done more and treated him differently “You are all to blame” the narrator is saying that it’s everyone’s fault that he committed suicide. He felt unloved and the people that should be there for him weren’t. It is all of their faults, none of them did what they could have to keep him alive.

Lyric: And if you open up your heart
 And stay so far away
But you are all the same
Annotation:
If you tried to show your emotions and ask for help but hid from the ones that you loved, how could we help you? “Opening up your heart” means to let others know your emotions and feelings “Stayed so far away” is saying that the young man did not show his emotions to the ones that he loved “You are all the same” this line is not said by angels this time, but by the narrator. It might mean that the narrator, the young man that committed suicide, feels that the people that should love him and help him were all just causing him to feel unloved, which is how the rest of the world made him feel. The ones that are supposed to love you and care for you should not be “the same” as the ones that are out to hurt you.

Lyric: And if you maybe figure it out
 Would you still explain?
And if she said she was sorry now
 Would you still complain?
Annotation:
Everyone is trying to figure out what was going on in the young man’s head, but no one was truly sure. “If you maybe figure it out, would you still explain?” If you can figure out what he was thinking, would you tell us? “And if she said she was sorry now, would you still complain?” I’m unsure what exactly this is referring to, possibly parents arguing about who is at fault and being bitter about everything with each other.

Lyric: And all the angels say
 Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
 You are all to blame
 Cause all the angels say
 Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
 You are all the same
Annotation:
“You are all to blame” is again saying that the impurities of the world are what cause depression and suicide. “You are all the same” is a way of the angels saying that deep down, all humans are just as messed up and impure as the next. No one is immune to the darkness of the world, and they are all just as bad as everything they are exposed to.

Lyric: She went alone
 And went to the emergency
And parked her car in the dark

 They told her, ”please
He only has but minutes more
 You might just say goodbye”
Annotation:
This woman goes to the hospital where the young man was taken after being found, and she rushes inside only to be told that he doesn’t have much left to live. She has to hurry if she wants to say her final goodbye, and there might not be much time for her to do that. He is at the end of his life now.

Lyric: And all the angels say
 Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
 You are all to blame
 Cause all the angels say
 Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
 You are all to blame
Annotation:
The angels are watching over the young man, and they know what is happening in his brain. They know all the things that caused him to attempt suicide, and they are saying “you are all to blame” as a way of saying that everyone and everything on earth is impure and causes him to want to take his life.

Lyric: She got the call
And then she threw her jacket on
And stormed off down the hall

 They got the call
And picked him up at four A.M
And tore off down the road
Annotation:
All speculation: A woman, possibly a mother, sister, friend, or lover, gets the news that a young man has attempted suicide. She grabs her jacket and storms out (not really angry, but almost full of fear and urgency) of the house. It’s early, 4AM, and she goes to get him.
